My First Podcast Conversation on the Do It Scared Anyway Podcast
I joined Eboni Harbeson on the Do It Scared Anyway Podcast to talk about motherhood, photography, and finding myself again.
I’m usually the one behind the camera, so sitting down for my first podcast interview felt a little outside my comfort zone. But on Do It Scared Anyway, Eboni and I talked about more than my photography business. We talked about motherhood, creativity, and finding your way back to yourself when you spend so much of your time caring for other people.
I shared something that goes back to the beginning of my love for photographs. I grew up without my mother, and I had one photograph of her that I held close. That picture meant so much to me. As I got older, I carried disposable cameras around and photographed my friends and anything else I wanted to remember. Then I became a mom, bought a camera, and wanted to capture everything about my children’s lives.
That history is a big part of why my heart is with family photography. I love the connections and little details that might pass unnoticed in the moment but mean everything when you look back. I also love photographing military families and giving them a way to remember the place they called home for a few years.
We talked about what sessions feel like, too. Some families tell me they’re shy or have never had professional photos taken. I want them to have room to relax, have fun, and be themselves. As a mom, I know how easy it is to look at a photo of yourself and notice everything you wish were different. One of my favorite parts of this work is helping someone see something beautiful in themselves that they may have missed.
The conversation also turned to my daughter’s autism and the children’s book I’m writing and illustrating about her PDA experience. She has taught me to slow down and look beyond what I first see. I hope the book helps other people see a little more of the world through her eyes.
And then there was the question at the heart of the episode: who am I outside of being a mom, a wife, and a photographer? I’m still figuring that out. I make digital art, take myself on little outings, and try to find pockets of time that are just for me. Some days that’s easier than others. I’m learning that I can love my family deeply and still make space for the creative person I am.
Near the end of our conversation, Eboni asked what I would tell someone who was scared to start finding themselves again. My answer was simple: “Just start. Start where you’re at.” Five or ten minutes, one new thing, one small step—it counts.
I’m glad I took my own advice and said yes to this conversation. If you’d like to hear more of it, watch my episode of Do It Scared Anyway here. Thank you for getting to know a little more of the person behind Captive Heart Photography. ❤️
